Message from Governor Eliot Spitzer
Welcome to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC). The LMDC was founded shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to help coordinate the revitalization of Lower Manhattan, particularly the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. The ability to come together in the face of adversity—and to build something stronger than it was before—is a fundamental part of the New York character. That spirit has supported the dramatic resurgence of Lower Manhattan. While overseeing the planning for a new World Trade Center site – where new towers are now underway – the LMDC has poured hundreds of millions of dollars of federal funds into residential projects, parks, and cultural amenities. These enhancements have helped compliment the district’s status as more than just a center of global commerce. Today, Lower Manhattan is more than a district where people work. It is alive with activity, from the East River to the Hudson River. Visit any of the wonderful neighborhoods south of Houston Street at any time of day, and you will find beautiful and vibrant communities where a record numbers of people live, work, play and experience the arts. In addition to strengthening Lower Manhattan’s neighborhoods, the LMDC has an obligation to coordinate the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. Over the past several months, however, we have forged the consensus necessary for progress. Working with the City of New York, the Port Authority, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the National September 11th Memorial, and other stakeholders, we are quickly transforming our vision for the World Trade Center site into reality. Our progress behind the scenes is now yielding fruit in the open. The World Trade Center site —which was nearly empty one year ago — now echoes with the methodical clang and clamor of construction. Workers are raising the steel skeleton of the Freedom Tower. The excavation for Towers 2, 3 and 4 is underway. And the National 9/11 memorial is under construction. Working together, we are realizing our vision: A world-class center of finance and commerce that serves not only as an engine for Lower Manhattan’s resurgence, but for New York City’s prosperity in the twenty-first century. |
