New York 1 to Carry January 13th Meeting Live

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey todayannounced plans to link all five boroughs and Long Island during two unprecedented public meetings regarding the future of the World Trade Center site. The meetings will take place on January 13th and 14th, and will run from 6pm to 11pm each night. On January 13th at Pace University, the LMDC and Port Authority will provide an overview of nine new plans for the site from Pace University in Lower Manhattan, which will be broadcast simultaneously to locations in Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. Participants at any of the six locations will then have an opportunity to voice their comments, which will also be broadcast simultaneously on large screens at each location.

Another meeting using the same format will be held on January 14th, focusing on a draft mission statement and program for the memorial that will be released early next week. The format of the meetings will enable thousands of New Yorkers - and thousands more people online - to comment without having to travel to Lower Manhattan. LMDC and Port Authority officials will be on hand at each location to listen and document the comments.  The public can also participate online at LMDC's website, www.renewnyc.org and watch the January 13 meeting on New York 1.

LMDC Chairman John C. Whitehead said, "This latest program of public meetings continues the broad range of efforts the LMDC has undertaken to reach out to the many constituencies who care about this important effort and wish to share their suggestions with the architects and planners."

Port Authority Executive Director Joseph J. Seymour said, "The rebuilding of Lower  Manhattan has been the most open and accessible process in history. Utilizing the most modern interactive technology, these hearings will continue the commitment by the Port Authority and the LMDC to maximize public input."

LMDC President Lou Tomson said,  "These meetings offer another forum for the public to join the dialogue and help shape the future of Lower Manhattan.   The innovative format of the meetings will make it easier for even more people to lend their voice to this historic process - and once again, shape the outcome."

The meetings are the next phase in LMDC's public outreach campaign, "Plans in Progress". The campaign features an exhibit of the plans at the Winter Garden, which has already drawn more than 50,000 visitors, and hosting of the plans on LMDC's website, which were viewed by more than 2.3 million visitors in the first 24 hours after they were released on December 18. The Winter Garden exhibit will run through February 2, 2003 and is open to the public from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, everyday including holidays. Another public meeting will be held in New Jersey on January 21 to receive comments on the plans. The LMDC will also mail the draft mission statement and program to family members of all victims killed by terrorism at the World Trade Center.

The public comment period for the new World Trade Center design plans and the draft memorial mission statement and program will end on February 2, 2003.
