Temporary WTC PATH Station and Vesey Bridge Opens

The temporary PATH station at the World Trade Center site is now officially open. Sunday, November 23, the same PATH train cars that were the last to carry people to safety on the morning of September 11, 2001, emerged from Exchange Place PATH Station in Jersey City to the World Trade Center site. This symbolic trek was an emotional milestone that signals the recovery in lower Manhattan.

The temporary station will be replaced permanently by the World Trade Center Transportation Hub which is scheduled to open in 2006.

The Vesey Street pedestrian bridge that extends over Route 9A/West Street from the World financial Center to the east side of Vesey Street is also now open. The bridge will provide a new and direct corridor from West Street. A pedestrian bridge across West Street was also destroyed in the September 11th attacks. The current crosswalk at West Street and Vesey Street cannot safely accommodate the estimated 6,000 pedestrians that will cross West Street in the morning rush hour.

Construction of the bridge is being overseen by the State Department of Transportation in conjunction with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and funded by Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
