LOWER MANHATTAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OPENS PUBLIC EXHIBIT OF EIGHT WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE MEMORIAL COMPETITION FINALISTS IN WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER WINTER GARDEN

The The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. opened an exhibition today of eight finalist designs in the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition at the Winter Garden. Finalists were guided by mission statement documents, developed by volunteer committees of family members, residents, survivors, first responders, arts and architecture professionals, and community leaders. The document provided specific elements to be included within the memorial including delineation of the tower footprints, recognition of every individual killed in terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 and a final resting place for unidentified remains. The documents were also shaped by thousands of public comments generated at public meetings in every borough, Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The international competition was launched in April 2003 and 5,201 submissions were received from 63 nations and 49 states, making it the largest design competition in history.

The Winter Garden is located in the World Financial Center on 200 Liberty Street. The designs will be on display until the jury makes the final decision and a winner is selected.
